In October of 2007, a British student named Meredith Kercher was murdered in Perugia, Italy. In the report, the case showed itself to be the result of resistance to sexual assault. One of the three main suspects of the murder was Amanda Knox, an American student from Seattle. The other two were both men. At the time, Knox was suspected to have the fatal blow to Kercher's throat. Since then, Rudy Guede, one of the other two suspects, has been convicted for murder and sentenced to 30 years in prison. Amanda Knox's trial resumed as of Jan. 16, 2009 in Italy and she too is threatened to serve 30 years in prison. She previously confessed to the murder, however is now claiming that she had been forced to make a false confession due to abuse during the interrogation. In the article, it states that everyone back home in Seattle believes that Amanda is innocent, however, it also states that she is "the most recognizable and hated woman in Italy."
Yesterday in class we discussed the differences in treatment of crimes when committed by women and men. Here, Knox is being threatened with the same sentence as a man who was involved in Kercher's murder. If this had happened in America, do you think it would have had the same result? And also, if there was an American man on trial instead of Amanda Knox, do you think that it would have had the same affect on the publicity of the trial("American Girl, Italian Nightmare")?
