Once a week, usually on Friday, we’ll take about 15 minutes to consider a current events topic that is related to what we’re studying in American Studies. Each week, a different student is responsible for making a current events presentation. Presentations will take place throughout the 1st semester.
Presentations should include the following:
1. A Blog Post, on hawkenamstud.blogspot.com. The post should include:
a. A summary of the news story in question
b. Some analysis of the news story
c. Connection to what we’re studying in American Studies (within a few weeks)
d. Links to at least one major news outlet covering this story
e. A question for class discussion (interpretive or evaluative)
2. An oral presentation, where you recap the news story from your post, make a connection to class, and pose the question for discussion.
3. A written reflection, in which you write a paragraph reflecting on how your presentation and discussion went. You should be sure to identify a minimum of one significant strength and one significant goal for the future based on your own public speaking skills (based on video of yourself, if possible). The reflection is due the Tuesday after your oral presentation, by email, to Ms. Griffin.
Your grade will be based on the following criteria:
15 Points: Your blog post, which will be evaluated on:
-the standards of good writing
-the relevance of your chosen story
-the depth of your analysis.
15 Points: Your presentation, including the written reflection.
