On December 2 Obama gave a speech in which he announced his plan to increase troops in Afghanistan. These troops will America 30 Billion dollars, but he feels it necessary that to achieve victory in the war against Al-Qaeda America needs a decisive victory in Afghanistan soon. The extra 30,000 troops that he plans to send over should be able to overpower the Taliban taking refuge in Afghanistan. Obama also plans to put more pressure on Afghanistan President Harmid Karzai to take control of his country by aiding the United States troops in battle. These troops will also be used to help plant crops and do other common activities to help out the Afghan citizens. Obama believes that these troops will be able to swiftly defeat the Taliban because he had pledged that the withdrawl of troops will begin in 18 months. This decision can make or break Obama's presidency because if his plan works and America successfully defeats the Taliban he will be revered. If this plan does not work he will lose many supporters and it will be challenging for him to be re-elected. This is related to the Civil War because both Lincoln and Obama are battling against people trying to destroy America. During the Civil War the Southern States broke away from America, and Lincoln had to defeat them to bring the country back together. America has been at war with Al-Qaeda since they bombed us on 9/11. Their goal is to weaken America to the point where we are no longer a global power, and up to this point they have done their job. The fight on terrorism have already put the American economy in a huge economic downturn, and the increase in troops will cost us more money. Even though our economy has been down, we have not been directly attacked since 9/11, so our fight could be justified.
Do you think that Obama's increase in troops is helpful or harmful to the overall well being of America?
