In President Obama's State of the Union address, he discussed several topics that affected our country in some way. One topic he talked about was the influx of illegal immigrants from Mexico into America. Illegal immigrants are viewed as a serious problem by many Americans, and there have been many heated debates on how to handle the problem of illegal immigration. In his address, President Obama explained how he wanted to handle illegal immigration, "I strongly believe that we should take on, once and for all, the issue of illegal immigration. I am prepared to work with Republicans and Democrats to protect our borders, enforce our laws and address the millions of undocumented workers who are now living in the shadows...And let's stop expelling talented, responsible young people who can staff our research labs, start new businesses, and further enrich this nation". Obama explained that the illegal immigrants who got a good education and can contribute to our country in some way should be allowed to stay, but those who aren't getting an education and are sucking up tax dollars should be deported. The non partisan Congressional Budget Office estimated that "one part of the Dream Act, which would provide citizenship for 300,000-500,000 illegal aliens, would reduce the deficit by $1.4 billion". However, the negatives economically of doing this would far outweigh the positives, as estimated by the Budget Office. They projected that by 2060, this one part of the Dream Act would add "$5-20 billion" to the deficit. This relates to the topics of immigration that we just studied. This leads to the question: Do you agree with President Obama that we should allow the illegal immigrants that are educated to stay in America, or should we just deport all illegal aliens? Does the moral aspect, or what we think is right, outweigh the economic aspect?
