During this unit we have been focusing on the relationship between America and the immigrants who seek shelter and a new life here, ad weather or not we have kept that promise as a country.
Recently, congress was asked to vote on the Dream Act. The Dream Act was a proposed bill that would take young men and women who have been living in the country illegally, who have often been raised and educated in the country, and it would give them a chance to become productive citizens instead of being deported. These immigrants would get an opportunity to attend college and to serve in the U.S. military, as well as bettering working environments, if they met the requirements in the Dream Act. However, despite Obama's push to pass this bill, it didn't make it past congress. The article states Obama wants, "to curb the Department of Homeland Security, which is deporting at a record pace many of the very people he says deserve a chance to stay." (New York Times). Based on our reading of The New Colossus, do you think we are fulfilling the promise we made to immigrants to take them in and provide opportunities for success?
