During his speech President Barack Obama described a new competition he has prompted to the 50 states of America. Race to the Top is a competition that awards states with the best education more money. Obama instated this competition in order to improve the performance of schools in America. Already this race has had a significant effect. One school that was ranked at one of the worst in it's state last year had 97% of it's students graduate with a diploma.
As he continued he began to speak of undocumented children who are currently being educated in our school systems. These bright children have no idea they are illegally here or that their parents snuck them into the country. Obama believes that today is the time to address illegal immigration. Not only do we need to protect our boarders but we need to quit expelling talented young people who have potential to further enrich our nation.
This part of Obama's speech in particular connected to what we have been studying in American Studies. Not only have we been discussing immigrants and their lives but we took a substantial amount of time discussing the Dream Act and weather we believe children who were brought over by their parents should be deported. According to Obama these illegal children are enriching our country and could be our future doctors, scientists, or teachers and therefore it is to our disadvantage to deport them. Although the issue is still very broad and no decisions have been made Obama stated that now is the time that these debates, although they may be long, will happen and as a country we will decide what to do with these immigrant children.
