Dakota Territory

The Dakota Territory became a territory on March 2, 1861 after Minnesota became a state. The Dakota Territory was both North and South Dakota, and most of Montana and Wyoming. The territory was primarily filled with Native Americans, especially the Sioux Indians. More and more white Americans started to filter into the Dakota Territory. In the late 1870's the people in the Dakotas did not feel like they had enough say in the country, so they tried to become states. After many years of petitioning, on November 2, 1889 North Dakota and South Dakota became states.
